JCAHO Pain Management:

Pain CAN and SHOULD be controlled

Author/Presenter:

Length of Program: 90 minutes

Course Description:

Reviews have shown that the under-treatment of pain in ALL settings is common. Despite concerted efforts by organizations such as the American Pain Society, the Agency on Health Care Policy and Research, the National Cancer Society, Cancer Pain Initiatives and others, there has been very little impact on clinical practice. This program presents an overview of the present situation, a review of the findings of JCAHO two-year study and the reasons why they have introduced assessment and management of pain into JCAHO standards for accreditation of healthcare facilities. JCAHO’s new set of standards for assessment and management of pain are presented and suggestions made as to how to apply those new standards in the clinical field.

Target Audience:

This program is designed for a multidisciplinary audience of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, physical therapists and other interested healthcare professionals working with patients in pain.

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:

1. Review the scope-of-pain problem.

2. Identify the key components of a comprehensive pain assessment and factors which impede quality pain management.
